Climate protection and freedom: this is only a contradiction at first glance. After all, the climate crisis poses an acute threat to our freedom – for example in the form of floods, heatwaves and crop failures, which not only jeopardise our health but also social cohesion. At the same time, the climate crisis is also a crisis of justice. This is because the main victims are not those who have caused it. Poorer people, societies in the Global South and young people are more affected by the consequences of global warming.

Is our lifestyle jeopardising our freedom and security – both now and in the future? What solutions does research offer? And how can we enable future generations to live a good, fair and free life? We would like to discuss these and other questions on Monday, 17 June at 7 pm at the Zeiss-Großplanetarium in Berlin.

The short film “Planetary Boundaries of Freedom” will be shown for the first time as part of the event. The film project by the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research (PIK) focuses on freedom in the context of the dangers of the climate crisis.

Moderator:
Kristin Langen, freelance climate and economic journalist and member of the Network Climate Journalism Germany
The audience is cordially invited to contribute their own perspectives, experiences and questions to the discussion.

The event is organised by Wissenschaft im Dialog in cooperation with the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research and is part of the debate series Freiheitsperspektiven. The debate series Freiheitsperspektiven takes place within the Science Year 2024 – Freedom. It is funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research.
